Collaborating on an İRobot Review with Google Docs

Updated: Jun 15

For a recent assignment, my group and I worked together to write a film review using Google Docs. The film we reviewed was I, Robot (2004), starring Will Smith. Personally, I really enjoyed the movie. The costume design and vehicles used by Will Smith were standout elements for me. The futuristic atmosphere felt well-crafted and visually exciting.

My group members were Furkan Saydur  and Zeynep Yeşildağ. Each of us had different takes on what aspects of the film were most important, which led to a lot of back-and-forth during the writing process. The task was to collaboratively analyze the film’s plot, characters, themes, and production details. While that sounds straightforward, it ended up being more stressful than expected.

One of the biggest challenges was using Google Docs for collaboration. On a laptop, it’s fine. But on mobile, it’s honestly terrible—slow, glitchy, and hard to navigate. It felt like the platform wasn’t designed for true flexibility. We constantly dealt with formatting issues and overlapping edits, which made the process feel more annoying than productive.

Even though I liked the film itself, the writing process wasn’t enjoyable. There were too many arguments over which opinions to include, and following strict guidelines made it hard to express my actual thoughts. We made some modifications according to our peers' comments. I don’t think I’d want to go through something like this again.

Here is a screenshot of our review page with comments from my peers.

Welcome, consider yourself lucky.

Never shrink to fit. The world will try to mold you, to make you blend in, to follow the path already paved; but you weren’t made for that. Don’t copy, create. Don’t limit, imagine. Stay bold in your vision, unshaken in your values. The moment you choose to be ordinary, you lose what makes you different. Stand tall. Stay true.

Be the exception.

Undeniably different.
