From Draft to Revision: Writing with AI in the Classroom

Updated: Jan 4

Greetings everyone. For this week’s task, Demirali Kılıç, Zeynep Yeşildağ, and I designed an AI integrated writing activity for EFL high school prep students. The focus was opinion writing on the topic of school uniforms. We created a structured worksheet using Canva. The lesson plan based on the ASSURE model was prepared collaboratively on Google Docs. With the very valuable insight and comments of instructor Doç. Dr. Gökçe Kurt Tiftik we revised our worksheet.

An example page from our Canva designed worksheet focusing on opinion formation and vocabulary support.

Our revised worksheet has 5 main parts. First helps students form, analyze, and organize their opinions. It then introduces key vocabulary related to the topic. After planning, students write a first draft of their opinion paragraph. They submit this draft to ChatGPT using a predetermined prompt and receive focused feedback. Based on this feedback, students revise their work and produce a final version. The activity also includes a reflection section where students evaluate the usefulness of AI in their writing process.

Overall, after certain modifications and changes the task is clear, controlled, and classroom ready.

Do you have any ideas to improve our work? Let me know if they worth hearing.

Never shrink to fit. The world will try to mold you, to make you blend in, to follow the path already paved; but you weren’t made for that. Don’t copy, create. Don’t limit, imagine. Stay bold in your vision, unshaken in your values. The moment you choose to be ordinary, you lose what makes you different. Stand tall. Stay true.

Be the exception.

Undeniably different.
